Tom Coburn is a huge idiot.

is a huge idiot.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is a bumbling ignoramus.  I have been watching the Sotomayor confirmation hearings religiously (it’s like my porn), and I got SO worked up every time he questioned her (FIFTY MINUTES?! REALLY?!) that I almost threw my nice work laptop across the room.

Today, for example, he criticized the fact that women can choose to terminate their pregnancy at any time in order to protect the health of the mother.  Um? The problem with that is?

Obviously, in his view, women are not able to make informed decisions about their health and well being and are in no position to decide that they would rather not die. BUT, apparently Santa Jesus has bestowed Sen. Coburn with the ability to decide what is best for ALL women in the United States. Well, thank heavens we have such a Messiah on our hands.

This guy is a MEDICAL DOCTOR. Not only is he a doctor, but he was an obstetrician.  Ergo, he should understand the possibility of complications in pregnancy that can endanger the mother’s life and that there can be a high probability of the mother’s death if she carries the pregnancy to term.  Yet, he still opposes allowing women the choice to save their own lives in this situation. That’s a real head-scratcher.

Not only does this beacon of moral fortitude oppose abortion even in cases of rape, but he also said this in July of 2004:

“I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life.”

…um. Let’s examine this for just a second.

Coburn opposes abortion because he believes it ends life. Okay, I disagree with him on that point, but to each his own.  However, if the “taking of life” is such a heinous offense, then WHY does he support murdering people who practice it? More than a touch hypocritical, imho.

I could go on and on, but I wont. Instead, I’ll just end with this:

I sincerely hope that Sen. Coburn one day has to make a decision for himself that is even 1/100th as difficult as the decision that women across the United States make every day when they wrestle with what is best for them, their families, and their bodies.  Then, maybe he will understand that he is in no position to speak about what he feels women should and should not be able to do.
